Gellért Hill - A spiritual hike
Looks like our capital has everything. If you feel like hiking you can do a bit of it even in the center of Budapest on the rocky hill towering over the Danube in the heart of the city. This ‘rock’ serves as the cusp of a heart! Do you want to know why and how?
So even if you’re not the alpinist of the year, you can easily manage this summit of 235 m (771 ft) well worth it for the surprising stories associated with it. One thing is certain, by the end you’ll know who Gellért was, maybe you’ll even know how to pronounce his name correctly. Are you eager to hear about legends of pagans and the mighty Huns? Would you like to know more about hot springs and how they were used during the centuries? Can’t wait to find out about a mysterious Hungarian religious order who built a church in the caves of the hill? Witches, ghosts, even vampires can appear here while we stroll around the paths and the slopes of this hilly park, but only if you dare to come here to see the sunset, and you are brave enough to leave the right way marked by tiny heart-shaped signs. By the way, the hilltop has the best panoramic views of the city. Have we convinced you?
Itinerary: This tour takes place on the Buda side and the best point to start this walk is from the Gellért Hotel. You don’t necessarily have to be extremely physically fit, but please bear in mind that during this tour we have to go uphill most of the time (and then down). After visiting the Gellért Hill Cave we continue to go up, having breaks on some ‘balconies of gods’. Do not forget to bring your camera with you, even on the way down there are spectacular views. On the top we reach the Liberty Statue and the Citadel, on our way down we will cross the Philosophers’ Garden. The tour finishes near the Elizabeth bridge. The sunset walk is optional, we can go by day or in the evening, this can always be discussed previously.
