Today is a day of remembrance initiated by Hungary for the Victims of Communist Dictatorships.

On this day in 1947, Béla Kovács, leader of the Hungarian Independent Smallholders’ Party, was unlawfully detained and deported to the Soviet Union. He spent nearly 9 years in different prisons and labor camps. In 1956 he was released, and during the Hungarian Uprising he became Minister of Agriculture under the Prime Ministry of Imre Nagy, leader of the revolution.

More than 100 million people in the world were killed because of communist dictatorships and billions of lives have been affected by it. May they rest in peace and may there be peace in the hearts of all.
