On this day in 1873 Buda and Pest decided to get married.

On 17 November, 1873 three cities and an island got united. Buda, Pest, Óbuda and Margaret Island got together to build a new capital to Hungary namily Budapest, whose developement proved to be unstoppable. This meant only 10 districts and around 350,000 inhabitants, but with the political compromise between Austria and Hungary 1867, a cultural and economic boom happened in our country which was crowned with the 1896 Millennium Celebrations. Agricultural industries, milling and food industries moved into the new capital, and engineering industries grew.

More railways were built, and, just like the major roads, they all started out from Budapest. Under the prime ministry of Count Gyula Andrássy a gigantic construction project was launched in the city: countless apartment- , government-, office buildings, banks, covered markethalls, bridges were buit and the veins of Pest the Andrássy Avenue and the Grand Boulevard were drawn and born. All of the above mentioned lead to a massive immigration to the capital, and just within 10 years the population tripled.

Happy birthday our beloved hometown!
